JESSICA BACKHAUS gilt heute als eine der wichtigsten Vertreterinnen zeitgenössischer Fotografie aus Deutschland. Ihre Arbeit wird international ausgestellt und publiziert und findet sich in wichtigen privaten und öffentlichen Sammlungen wie dem Museum of Fine Arts, Houston, der Margulies Collection in Miami oder der Sammlung der Deutschen Börse in Frankfurt. Jessica Backhaus, 1970 geboren und in Berlin aufgewachsen, studierte Fotografie und Visuelle Kommunikation in Paris. Nach ihrem Studium, zwischen 1995 und 2010 lebte sie in New York; seit dem vergangenen Jahr lebt und arbeitet Jessica Backhaus wieder in ihrer Heimatstadt Berlin.
Wie schon in ihren früheren Serien, etwa „Jesus and the Cherries“ (2005) oder „What still remains“ (2008), entwickelt Jessica Backhaus auch in ihren neuen Serien „I wanted to see the World“ (2010) und „Once, still and forever“ (2011) einen starken Sinn für die Melancholie des Alltäglichen und die Kraft von Farbe und Licht als emotionalem Ausdrucksmittel. „I wanted to see the World“, 2010 veröffentlicht im Kehrer Verlag, ist eine Serie von großformatigen Wasser-Reflektionen als abstrakte Farb- und Licht-Studien. Mit der ganz neuen Serie „Once, still and forever“ kehrt Jessica Backhaus zurück zum klassischen Stillleben. Die Serie wurde bisher noch nicht publiziert und wird in Hamburg zum ersten Mal ausgestellt.
JESSICA BACKHAUS is regarded as one of the most distinguished voices in contemporary photography in Germany today. Her work is exhibited and published internationally and found in important collections, both public and private, such as the Collection of the Museum of Fine Arts, Houston, the Margulies Collection in Miami or the Deutschen Börse Collection in Frankfurt. Born in 1970 and raised in Berlin, she studied photography and visual communication in Paris. From 1995 to 2010, Backhaus lived in New York; last year she has moved back to her home town and is now living and working in Berlin.
As in former series such as "Jesus and the Cherries" (2005) or "What still remains" (2008), Jessica Backhaus' new work in the series "I wanted to see the World" (2010) and "Once, still and forever" (2011) develops a strong sense for the melancholic in the every-day and the power of color and light as emotional means of expression. "I wanted to see the World", published in 2010 by Kehrer, is a series of large scale water reflections as abstracted studies in color and light. The brand new series "Once, still and forever" marks a return to the classical still life. This new series as not yet been published and is exhibited for the first time.

JESSICA BACKHAUS, 1970 geboren und in Berlin aufgewachsen, studierte Fotografie und Visuelle Kommunikation in Paris. Seit 1995 lebt Backhaus in New York. Ihre Arbeit wurde international ausgestellt, unter anderen in der National Portrait Gallery in London und im Martin-Gropius-Bau in Berlin. 2005 erschien ihr erstes Buch „Jesus and the Cherries“ im Kehrer Verlag. Im vergangenen Jahr veröffentlichte Jessica Backhaus zwei neue Bücher „What still remains" und „One Day in November“, aus denen zahlreiche Motive nun erstmals in Hamburg zu sehen sind.
