Jessica Backhaus | Once, still and forever

As in her previous photographic work, notably “Jesus and the Cherries” (2005), “One Day in November” and “What Still Remains” (both 2008), in her latest series “Once, still and forever” Jessica Backhaus again develops a strong sense of the melancholy of the everyday and the emotional quality of color and light. “Photographs capture a moment in time, but what is time? This question is haunting me. Photography has its roots in the desire to hold on to a moment, to preserve something that has happened in the past and to make it visible in the present. At the same time I am fascinated by the experience of disappearance, of slipping away … ” (Jessica Backhaus)

Jessica Backhaus is considered one of the most distinguished voices in contemporary photography out of Germany today. Her work is published and exhibited internationally and can be found in major collections such as the collection of the Museum of Fine Arts, Houston, the Margulies Collection in Miami or the Deutsche Börse Collection in Frankfurt. Kunsthalle Erfurt opens the first major museum show of Jessica Backhaus’ work on September 20. Born in 1970 and raised in Berlin, she studied in Paris. From 1995 to 2010 Backhaus lived in New York and has since returned to work and live in Berlin. The book to the series “Once, still and forever” is published by Kehrer Verlag, Heidelberg.

Wie in ihren früheren fotografischen Serien, vor allem „Jesus and the Cherries“ (2005), „One Day in November“ und „What still remains“ (beide 2008), entwickelt Jessica Backhaus auch in ihrer neuen Arbeit „Once, still and forever“ einen starken Sinn für die Melancholie des Alltäglichen und die emotionale Qualität von Farbe und Licht. „Fotografien erfassen einen Moment in der Zeit, aber was ist Zeit? Diese Frage treibt mich um. Die Fotografie hat ihre Wurzeln in dem Wunsch danach, einen Augenblick festzuhalten, um etwas, das in der Vergangenheit geschehen ist, im Jetzt sichtbar zu machen, zu dokumentieren. Jessica Backhaus gilt heute als eine der bedeutendsten Stimmen der zeitgenössischen Fotografie aus Deutschland. Ihre Arbeit wird international ausgestellt und veröffentlicht und findet sich in bedeutenden Sammlungen wie der Sammlung des Museum of Fine Arts, Houston, der Margulies Collection in Miami oder der Deutschen Börse Sammlung in Frankfurt. Die Kunsthalle Erfurt zeigt ab dem 20. September die erste umfassende Museumsausstellung zum Werk von Jessica Backhaus. 1970 geboren und aufgewachsen in Berlin, studierte sie Fotografie und visuelle Kommunikation in Paris. Von 1995 bis 2010 lebte Backhaus in New York, heute lebt und arbeitet sie wieder in Berlin. Das Buch zur Serie „Once, still and forever“ ist im Kehrer Verlag, Heidelberg erschienen.
